Mesh Vs Cushioned Office Chairs (Which is Better)?

If you’re looking for a new office chair, you’ll probably come across two main options: mesh and cushioned.
Mesh chairs have become increasingly popular, particularly in modern offices and home offices. They look smart, have a lighter appearance and the breathable back can be a real benefit when you’re sitting at a desk for several hours.
Cushioned chairs offer a more traditional feel, with a padded seat and back that many people find immediately comfortable.
So, which is better?
There isn’t a straightforward answer. Both have their advantages, and much depends on the chair itself, how you use it, and what you find comfortable.
Mesh Office Chairs
Mesh chairs are now a common sight in offices, and there are good reasons for that.
The main benefit is breathability. Air can circulate through the back of the chair rather than being trapped against a solid upholstered surface. If you work in a warm office or spend most of your day sitting at your desk, this can make a noticeable difference.
They also have a modern appearance. The clean lines and open back work particularly well in contemporary offices and home workspaces.
A well-designed ergonomic mesh chair can also give very good back support. The mesh allows some movement while still supporting your back, and the tension can make the chair feel comfortable without being overly firm.
If you’re particularly interested in the breathability and support of a mesh back, you can take a look at our range of mesh back chairs.
Not all mesh chairs are the same
We’ve seen a lot of cheaper mesh chairs over the years, and this is where it’s worth being careful.
Some chairs are simply not designed for the demands of sitting in them for a full working day, every day. They may be perfectly adequate for occasional use, but problems can develop when they’re used continuously.
One of the things that can happen is the mesh losing its tension or starting to sag. Once that happens, the chair can feel very different from when it was new. Instead of supporting you properly, you may find yourself sitting further back into the chair.
That’s why we wouldn’t recommend choosing a mesh chair simply because it looks modern or because it’s cheaper.
The mesh itself, the frame supporting it, and the mechanism underneath all play a part in how the chair performs over time.
What about cushioned office chairs?
Cushioned chairs have been around for much longer and remain a popular choice.
For many people, the main attraction is the feel. A good quality padded seat and back can feel comfortable as soon as you sit down, and some people simply prefer the softer feel compared with mesh.
There’s also plenty of choice. You can find cushioned ergonomic chairs with firm or softer seats, fabric upholstery, adjustable lumbar support and a range of mechanisms.
However, more padding doesn’t necessarily mean a better chair.
A chair can feel very soft when you first sit in it but become less comfortable after several hours. For anyone working at a desk all day, things such as seat depth, lumbar support, armrest position, and the ability to adjust the chair are just as important as how much padding it has.
Which is more comfortable for working all day?
This is where personal preference comes into play.
Some people sit down in a mesh chair and immediately prefer it. Others would choose a cushioned chair every time.
If you’re working at a desk for eight hours a day, we’d suggest looking at the chair as a whole rather than concentrating on whether it has a mesh or cushioned back. Our range of ergonomic chairs includes different styles and adjustments for people who spend long periods at their desks.
A good ergonomic office chair should allow you to adjust the seat and back position, support your lower back, and give you enough room to sit comfortably. Armrests and seat depth can make a big difference too.
After all, the aim isn’t just to feel comfortable when you first sit down. You want to still be comfortable several hours later.
Mesh or cushioned for a home office?
For a home office, either can work well.
Mesh is often chosen for its modern look and because it doesn’t feel as bulky. The breathability is another advantage, especially if your home office tends to get warm.
Cushioned chairs are a good choice if you prefer a more traditional office chair or simply like the feel of a padded seat and back.
If you’re looking for a chair specifically for working from home, you can also take a look at our range of home office chairs.
Think about how you work. If you’re spending most of your working week at your desk, comfort and adjustability should take priority over appearance.
What about durability?
This is something we think buyers should pay more attention to.
There are plenty of inexpensive office chairs available, but not all of them are designed for continuous use.
There’s a big difference between a chair that’s used for a couple of hours a day and one that’s occupied for a full working day, five days a week.
If you’re buying a chair for a business or for someone who works from home full-time, check what level of use the chair is designed for. It’s also worth looking at the warranty.
At Ergonomic Solutions Direct, all of our chairs have a minimum 5-year warranty. We feel that’s important because an office chair is a piece of equipment that’s used every working day. It shouldn’t be treated as something you’ll replace after a year or two.
So, which should you buy?
If you like a modern-looking chair, want good airflow, and prefer the feel of a supportive back, a good-quality mesh chair could be the right choice.
However, if you prefer a softer, more traditional feel, a cushioned chair may suit you better.
Or, perhaps you like the feel of mesh and want airflow across both your back and seat, you may also want to look at our fully mesh chairs.
But we wouldn’t make the decision based on mesh versus cushion alone.
A well-made mesh chair will generally be a better investment than a cheap mesh chair that wasn’t designed for regular use. The same applies to cushioned chairs.
Look at the chair’s ergonomic features. How it is constructed. What sort of use it is designed for, and what warranty is provided. If you’re not sure what to look for in an ergonomic chair, we’ve also put together a guide explaining what makes a good one: “What Is an Ergonomic Chair?”
